Description
Everybody loves the SC State Flag of South Carolina. It is regarded as one of the most popular state flags in the United States. The crescent moon shape came from the symbol worn on South Carolina’s Confederate soldier’s caps. This Crescent shape with sharp points was also protective metal worn over the upper chest area by ancient warriors to protect the heart, called a gorget. During the Cival War, Colonel William Moultrie's decision to construct the fort out of palmetto tree logs inspired the Palmetto Tree Symbol which protected the fort very well from the British. It was said the spongy fiber of the logs absorbed or repelled cannon balls very effectively and little damage was done to Ft Moultrie on Sullivan's Island. |
